Summary

Assistant Costumer

Bucknell University seeks an Assistant Costumer in the Department of Theatre and Dance, for a one- to two-year appointment. The Assistant Costumer position is a part-time, 30 hours/week, 39 weeks/year position following the academic calendar. The assistant costumer supports the costume design faculty and costume studio manager in producing the costumes for the department's artistic season and must be self-motivated, responsible, and highly creative. This position is intended for early career costume technicians and/or costume designers seeking professional development including, but not limited to, portfolio building (design and technology) and costume studio management experience. This position reports to the Faculty Costume Designer. The assistant costumer will be mentored directly by the faculty costume designer and indirectly by the other department faculty and professional staff based on their individual goals.

Primary Duties:

Supporting the Department by producing costumes, including but not limited to: draping, pattern-making, cutting, sewing, crafting, and performing alterations.

Supporting the Department by designing costumes, including designing the costumes for the Winter theatre show and for select mainstage dance numbers throughout the academic year.

Acting as Assistant Costume Designer for all department mainstage productions in the artistic season, including but not limited to: maintaining costume paper for productions, conducting independent research, sourcing materials, participating in production meetings, participating in costume fittings, attending tech/dress rehearsals, and pulling/restocking costumes.

Supervising student undergraduate workers in the costume studio in collaboration with the faculty costume designer and costume studio manager.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre or related field.

• Basic skills in costume design, patterning, cutting, sewing, and crafting

Preferred Qualifications:

• Professional Work Experience: Professional costume production experience (i.e. stitcher, first hand, draper)

• Proficient/Advanced skills in patterning, cutting, sewing, and/or crafting

• Ability to frequently communicate with groups of people in open areas

• Ability to assist in observing and judging garment finish from the theatre seats

• Ability to frequently operate costume machinery

• Ability to work in a stationary position for 50% of the time or more.

• Ability to occasionally ascend and descend stairs/work ladders

• Ability to occasionally work outside to load or unload costume elements to/from vehicles

• Ability to transport 20 pounds of costumes

Salary Range:
18.23-21.45
