Bucknell University Weis Center for the Performing Arts

Bucknell University seeks an Assistant Technical Director for the Weis Center for Performing Arts. This position is responsible for supporting the overall technical operations of the Weis Center and plays a key role in the production process, including reviewing contracts and technical riders, leading and/or assisting with load-ins, rehearsals, productions, and load-outs.

The Assistant Technical Director supports the Executive Director's vision for the Weis Center and Bucknell University's commitment to artistic excellence by maintaining a high level of professionalism. They will assist the Technical Director in overseeing student performing arts tech assistants and provide professional technical support for performances and engagements by university departments, campus groups, and external users. This role supports all events included on the Weis Center visiting artist series in addition to other programs held within the Weis Center by other departments, such as Bucknell's Offices of Admissions, Communications, and the Music Department.

When appropriate, the Assistant Technical Director may serve as the primary audio, lighting, or video engineer, stage manager, or crew chief for Weis Center events. This role requires flexibility in scheduling and occasional long hours during periods of peak activity. Reporting to the Technical Director, this position is a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-exempt, staff position.

Primary Duties:

• Prepares the Weis Center stage and backstage area for productions by gathering and setting up the technical or staging equipment necessary for each production. Organizes and programs audio or lighting consoles for productions, and tears down technical or staging equipment.

• Operates sound or lighting consoles; stage manages and/or oversees and manages the backstage technical crew running an event during productions at the Weis Center.

• Assists the Technical Director in managerial tasks such as scheduling, providing supervision and guidance to student employees, and developing and implementing training to onboard new employees.

• Maintains the stage and backstage storage areas by providing ongoing organization and upkeep of spaces and equipment. Oversees the maintenance and repair of technical equipment, cleans, tests, inventories and labels equipment, troubleshoot equipment issues, and prepares retired equipment for donating or selling.

• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• Associate's degree or higher in a relevant field such as music technology or technical theater, or equivalent experience.

• Minimum of one year professional experience in technical production roles (e.g., audio engineering, lighting, video, carpentry, and/or rigging) with a demonstrated interest in supporting Weis Center productions.

• Ability to adapt and innovate to help keep the Weis Center a first-rate performing arts venue.

• Ability to multitask and manage several projects at once while meeting required deadlines and project milestones.

• Ability to be self-directed and take initiative.

• Ability to supervise and lead crew tasks.

• Knowledge of lighting and audio stage plots, input lists, and CAD drafting programs (e.g., Vectorworks).

• Basic skills in QLab programming, Dante audio routing, woodworking, and LED/automated lighting fixture repair.

• Excellent communication skills and ability to work professionally with diverse groups.

• Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Drive, Calendar) or similar software.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field such as music technology or technical theater, or equivalent experience.

• Minimum of two years' professional experience in technical production roles (e.g., audio engineer, lighting technician, video, carpentry, or rigging).

• Experience maintaining musical instruments and implementing micing techniques for various instruments

• Experience with ETC Eos lighting consoles and Yamaha digital audio consoles in live performance settings.

• Knowledge of safe theatrical rigging practices

• Strong soldering and electronics repair skills

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

• Ability to climb ladders and work at heights up to 70 feet

• Ability to stand for prolonged periods while operating lifts or focusing lighting

• Ability to crouch, crawl, push, pull, and reach to access equipment

• Strong visual and auditory acuity, including color vision, depth perception, and sound evaluation for mixing

Salary Range:
21.17-26.46
The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
