Des Moines Metro Opera is a major summer opera festival located in Indianola, IA. The company produces 3-4 new productions each season in a summer repertory schedule, presented within the intimate 467-seat theatre at the Blank Performing Arts Center. Our 53rd season includes Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, and Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
• Direct completion of all sound elements as specified by directors and designers within time and budget constraints.
• Determine and manage budget for all materials, supplies, and labor pertaining to the Sound Department.
• Help hire and train all Sound staff as needed.
• Oversee set up of sound equipment, including but not limited to, headset systems, media servers, SM console setup, audio monitoring, and creation and operation of sound effects and cues.
• Act as liaison between designer and director as needed.
• Consult with director on sourcing sound cues as needed.
• Attend all production meetings and necessary rehearsals.
• Coordinate acquisition and purchase of all sound and video equipment and rentals.
• Assist with Intern Workshops as needed.
• Maintain a clean and safe workplace.
Dates of Employment:
Sunday, May 11 – Friday, July 25, 2025.
Compensation:
$950/week during the festival season, overtime at 50 hours paid at a rate of $22.80/hour
$300 travel stipend to be paid on arrival.
DMMO will provide a single bedroom in an air conditioned two-bedroom apartment during the festival season.
Qualifications and Skills
Any Combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
• Minimum BA/BFA in Theatre, MFA preferred or equivalent professional experience.
• 4-6 years of experience in Sound production.
• Extensive knowledge of sound and video elements including, but not limited to, headset systems, video monitors, projectors, media servers, SM console setup, audio monitoring, and creation and operation of sound effects and cues.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proven leadership ability.
