Eben Alguire

Eben AlguirePosition Statement

In my time with the Institute so far, I’ve seen great leaps forward in how we’ve worked towards being a more equitable and inclusive creative assembly but we still have so much further to go. We also find ourselves in an era of vitriol and nationalistic authoritarianism where we will be at the forefront of a cultural resistance, as the performing arts often are, and as storytellers we keep our history and our futures alive.

In our work we tell stories that are both fictional and get to the inner truth of humanity. Our art and our craft are intrinsically linked to empathy and the human condition, and empathy without equity is nothing. My priorities, if elected, will reflect this. We build on the work of our predecessors with fresh eyes and perspectives. We will listen to our members and we will adapt to our ever-evolving social landscape. We will educate, we will connect, we will encourage, and we will unite. When we work together, we thrive and we progress: intellectually, empathetically, technologically, and creatively.

I am looking forward to the opportunity to have a greater and more immediate impact on our Institute and our industry should I be elected.

Jonathan Allender-Zivic

Jonathan Allender-ZivicPosition Statement

As a proud member of USITT and a lifelong advocate for the performing arts and entertainment industry, I am honored to stand as a candidate for the USITT Board of Directors. My professional journey has been dedicated to advancing theatrical design, technology, and education.

With a multifaceted background spanning professional theatres, academia, and business ownership in the theatrical space, I have gained a broad perspective on the industry. This experience provided me with an understanding of how different facets of the field are interconnected, where its strengths and weaknesses lie, and how USITT can help bridge gaps. My relationships with both professionals and students position me to be a valuable resource as the Institute strives to expand its professional membership, enhance conference attendance, and develop year-round programming.

As someone who has worked in many aspects of the industry, I understand its challenges and opportunities and want to ensure that these opportunities are accessible to everyone. Education and mentorship are central to my values, and I believe in empowering others to excel in their craft and fostering connections that strengthen our community. Specifically, I aim to bring professional members together with students and early-career members to help everyone grow their networks and achieve their goals.

Additionally, I am committed to improving transparency within USITT as an organization. Even as a member of commission leadership, I have found myself surprised by aspects of how the organization operates. I believe that increasing transparency from the governance side will open doors to new members who may not yet understand the scope of USITT and better inform existing members about all facets of the organization.

If elected, I will work tirelessly to support USITT’s mission of advancing the performing arts and entertainment industry.

Ian Garrett

Ian GarrettPosition Statement

If elected to the USITT Board of Directors, I will focus on advancing the Institute’s leadership in sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity within the performing arts. Drawing on my experience as a designer, producer, and educator, I will champion initiatives aligned with the United Nations

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Together, we can shape a more sustainable, equitable, and just future for our industry.

To achieve this vision, I will advocate for expanded resources and training opportunities, such as workshops, certification programs, and grants, to empower members to adopt sustainable practices and address climate-related challenges. By embedding ecological considerations into USITT’s programs and conferences, we can lead efforts in greener, more responsible production and consumption.

Inclusion and decent work will remain central to my efforts. I will prioritize fostering international collaborations that engage diverse communities across USITT’s membership, ensuring equitable access to opportunities while promoting SDG 8’s commitment to creating safe, fair, and accessible pathways to meaningful work in theatrical design and production.

Additionally, I will champion the exploration of innovative technologies, such as mixed reality and virtual collaboration, to enhance access to resources and performances. By integrating the SDGs into USITT’s strategic vision, we can amplify our role as a global leader in sustainable, inclusive, and forward-thinking practices that support our members and their livelihoods for the challenges of the 21st century.

USITT has not only advanced my career but also given me a sense of belonging within our industry. From the moment I walked through the doors of the 2016 Conference & Stage Expo in Salt Lake City, I knew I wanted to be part of something that serves our industry and the greater good of humanity.

Throughout my career, I’ve seen both the challenges and opportunities facing early-career professionals and students—our future leaders. It is crucial that we create pathways for these individuals to engage more deeply with USITT at the national level. As a Board member, I will advocate for initiatives that remove the barriers preventing emerging professionals from fully participating in our community.

I am dedicated to bringing fresh perspectives and actionable ideas to the table, ensuring that USITT remains a dynamic, inclusive organization. My goal is to cultivate an environment where innovation thrives and every member, at any stage of their career, feels valued and empowered to contribute.

I have been serving this Institute every year of my consecutive 13-year membership, in big and small, official and unofficial capacities, starting with my first year when I volunteered to help strike the inaugural Sound Lab in Long Beach.  My passion for USITT has driven me to engage in conference assistant work, review panels, and now serving on the Conference Committee as Mainstage Sound Coordinator.  I am very excited for this opportunity to serve on the Board.

My first-hand participation in many USITT opportunities (see bio) has shaped my career.  Combined with my work as an educator and working professional USA 829 sound designer, this provides me access to understanding the needs, wants, and perspective of a wide body of our membership—students, fellow educators, early-career and seasoned professionals, and manufacturers/vendors/employers.  I want to make sure your voice is heard when considering the future of the Institute.

I have experience as a leader and/or member in partner organizations including OISTAT, KCACTF, AES, TSDCA, IATSE as well as serving as Interim Department Senator in the Michigan Technological University Senate.  This has given me an understanding of non-profit, not-for-profit and member organizations and policies, and also allows me to connect communities within and outside of USITT.

My passion for this Institute and its powerful opportunities drives me to continue to advocate for current and future members.  I am committed to shaping a sustainable and impactful future of the Institute in support of its Mission as a Director on the Board of Directors.
