Applications to Open in December for Howell Binkley Fellowship

November 10, 2023

Applications to The Howell Binkley Fellowship are being accepted December 8 - 30.

The Howell Binkley Fellowship was established in cooperation with the Hemsley Lighting Programs to honor Binkley's legacy of mentorship to emerging lighting designers. His career included 52 Broadway shows and two Tony Awards, for Jersey Boys and Hamilton. The recipient of this fellowship will gain exposure to New York City-based designers and the theatrical lighting community.

The three-month individualized course will be led by Ryan O'Gara and Amanda Zieve, two of Binkley's key associates of many years. They will help to develop the fellows' technical skills as well as give them practical advice on how to navigate the industry. This will include the opportunity to observe the tech of a Broadway, regional, opera, or dance production at the tech table.

Binkley always took time to talk to young designers; he loved to hear their stories and help them in any way he could. This fellowship continues his efforts, providing extra push and assistance in fostering the next generation.

The ideal candidate must be 21 years of age, a US citizen, and a possessor of at least two years of higher education or equivalence. If currently in an education program, they must be about to graduate. Recent graduates may also apply. They must also have a design background and the desire for a theatrical lighting career. They must be proactive, reliable, hardworking, mature, and a self-starter.

Applicants must submit a resume and a one-page statement addressing the following questions: What drew you to lighting design? Why does this specific opportunity interest you? Why are you the ideal candidate for this mentorship and what do you hope to gain? Also to be submitted; a website or digital portfolio and two letters of recommendation that can be emailed directly to BinkleyFellowship@gmail.com.
