The Royale is a boxing play made to be in a black box, but we staged it in a huge proscenium theatre. Our biggest challenge was making the audience feel the intimacy of a boxing ring. As a lighting designer, I focused on making the lighting bold and flexible. There were many lighting cues that were executed along with the boxers’ actions. I also incorporated a huge lighting wall (we called it a matrix) that appeared with fog in front of the audience in the last transition as our scenery panels moved. This is one of my proudest moments as a designer, as it shocked the audience, woke them up, and involved them in the scene.”
