Help us welcome one of our newest Professional Members, Sammy Hurley! Get to know them below.
1. Why did you become a member?
I believe there is power in community. Most of my biggest breakthroughs in theatre came as a direct result of community and collaboration.
2. How did you get your start in the industry?
I had a friend in theatre that asked if I would want to help cover their backstage track one weekend and I fell in love with working the behind the scenes of theatre.
3. What's your most memorable industry experience so far?
When I was working as the sound engineer for a production of In The Next Room at Hedgerow Theatre. In the Next Room has always been one of my favorite plays so to be able to bring it to life on stage was an absolute blessing. I got to work with a crew of insanely talented designers and actors, as well as one of my all time favorite directors.
4. Why are you passionate about the live entertainment industry?
There is a magic that is created when humans all come together and experience something (be it a concert, a musical or a play) in person that is awe inspiring. It's a journey you all collectively take with the artists leading you. I love it.
5. What's your favorite piece of equipment to work with?
That's a tough question, I'm not sure if I have one singular favorite!
6. What's your "artist's mission statement?"
Through my work, I aim to create unforgettable theatrical moments that linger in the hearts and minds of audiences long after the curtain falls.
7. What Advice do you live by?
If you're not learning, you're dying. (a close second is Cry once, Buy once.)
8. What inspires your work?
My work is inspired by the magic I felt as a kid when I saw my first Christmas Carol on a stage and the first time I went to Broadway. The awe inspiring acting, the magic of the lights, the surprises in the sets, being complete taken by the sound design. I want my work to be a love letter to my younger self.
9. Who would you most like to connect with?
I'd love to connect with other theatre educators and designers.
Bonus: What's your best tech week survival tip?
Make sure you have snacks, a water bottle, and caffeine!
