OSHA Announces Photo Contest as Part of Heat Illness Prevention Campaign

May 29, 2024

In response to the success of last year’s Beat the Heat contest, OSHA is excited to announce that a new contest is open now! This year, OSHA is sponsoring a photo contest to showcase effective heat safety in action and encourage workplaces to adopt similar practices.

What to know about participating?

Any industry can participate. You can be private citizens, individual businesses, associations, trade groups, worker centers, unions, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, research groups, state and local government entities, or others.

To participate in this photo contest, stakeholders can submit up to a maximum of 5 photos regarding heat safety in the workplace.

To submit your materials, please complete the contest submission form. You can also email photos to heatcampaign@dol.gov. Participants must still complete and agree to the terms and conditions outlined in the submission form to officially enter the contest.

What is OSHA looking for?

OSHA is looking for any photo submissions that promote heat safety in the workplace. We are open to receiving any type of photos showing heat safety in action. Some examples and ideas could include:

  • Photos of controls being used to protect workers.
  • Photos that show workers using shade structures during the workday.
  • Photos of training and engagement about heat safety.
  • Photos of innovative ways workplaces are cooling workers (i.e., air-conditioned rooms, cooling PPE, etc.).
  • Photos of workers utilizing controls.
  • Photos of how employers are ensuring cold water access outdoors.

Submissions will be evaluated on the quality of the photograph, clarity of the safety and health information or “message” conveyed through the image, originality, creativity, inclusion of workers, employers, or workplace imagery, and suitability for possible use in OSHA publications.

Important Dates and Prizes

The contest is open now and will close on July 19, 2024. OSHA anticipates announcing the winners in August. Winning photographs will be displayed prominently on OSHA’s heat photo contest webpage. Winners will also receive a “Beat the Heat” contest coin. For more information on OSHA’s Beat the Heat contest and to view last year’s contest winners, visit the contest webpage.
